I'll be giving two needle felting classes at <a href="http://wcmercantile.com/">WC Mercantile</a>, my favorite place to get merino. I use their wool in most of my sculptures, and their superfine merino is the softest stuff I've ever worked with. Go support them, and me, and learn a thing or two!<br />
<br />
There will be a Beginner Class on April 28th, where I'll teach how to make all the basic shapes out of core wool, attach them to each other, and cover them with nice dyed roving. No experience or materials required, everything is covered!<br />
<br /><span style="color: black; font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 7.5pt;"><span style="color: black; font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><strong></strong></span></span></span><br />
Then, on June 2nd, there will be an Advanced Class where each student will design a creature, then I'll go over how to make a wire armature (if necessary), how to make a structurally sound core shape, and how to decorate it with dyed roving and mixed media. Since the class is only 4 hours, you may not leave with a completed creature of your own design, but you will have made a lot of progress and will definitely be prepared to finish it on your own and make as many others as you want!<br />
<br /><span style="color: black; font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 7.5pt;"><span style="color: black; font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><strong></strong></span></span></span><br />
Here's the skinny:<br />

I've always loved comics. When I first started going to art school, I wanted to be a comic artist. That didn't quite pan out, but I still faithfully follow a large number of webcomics. Most of these artists don't make a living from their comic work; they get a little money from merch, but it's mostly a labor of love, putting their work up on the internet for people to enjoy for free.<br />
<br />
My husband has a webcomic. It's called <a href="http://hobolobo.net/">Hobo Lobo of Hamelin</a>. In this loose adaptation of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, there are these little rats that I adore. I wanted to make something to show my appreciation, the same way I make animal sculptures to express my fascination with them. It was thus that I made my very first piece of fanart:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaVJToCwy88xpUwYgBQN04zqLkKUMHgO0Wa2aBhXqS4Z8Wdq9fRkZSGMad92ahaR-z8FnhPsvXtMPLsVGtsxEBEZ6YtPd0dPhAo3eiF4-2iJ0-Ldi_FY-hgh2j245nGJEoA7uu1c2I0qY/s1600/inishedrat2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaVJToCwy88xpUwYgBQN04zqLkKUMHgO0Wa2aBhXqS4Z8Wdq9fRkZSGMad92ahaR-z8FnhPsvXtMPLsVGtsxEBEZ6YtPd0dPhAo3eiF4-2iJ0-Ldi_FY-hgh2j245nGJEoA7uu1c2I0qY/s320/inishedrat2.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Hamelinian Rat, from Hobo Lobo</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
While I was really happy with it, I had a conundrum. I didn't want to put it in the Cretur Fetur shop, because it didn't really have anything to do with the goals I wanted Cretur Fetur to accomplish. I could maybe open a different shop, and make more of this sort of thing, I thought. So I set about contacting a few of my favorite webcomic authors, asking for permission to make their characters into 3D needle felted sculptures.<br />
<br />
And so, <a href="http://stabwool.etsy.com/">Stabwool</a> was born!<br />
<br />

I have approximately a thousand million plans for more of these, and I don't plan on abandoning Cretur Fetur either. So, if you like them, please <a href="http://stabwool.tumblr.com/">follow my Tumblr</a> for updates, and <a href="http://twitter.com/stabwool">my Twitter</a> for progress photos and inane ramblings, and <a href="http://stabwool.tumblr.com/artists">check out all these people's lovely comics</a> (though, be warned, several of them are not safe for work).<br />

Thanks for reading I love you hi<br />

Happy 2012! Let's hope the world doesn't actually end. In the meantime, I'll be making creturs and taking pictures of them.<br />
<br />
I recently went to my favorite local art store and bought a bunch of colored Canson paper, to replace the battered old warm grey piece I've been using for over a year and has withstood many a sudden gust of photobombing wind. Now that piece can retire in piece and pursue its dreams of seeing Aruba or whatever. Godspeed, warm grey Canson. We had good times together.<br />
<br />
Anyway, here's what things are going to look like now, as illustrated by three custom cretur orders:<br />

As you may know, I often repeat animals. Bats and axolotls are frequently revisited species here at Cretur Fetur. But I've remade other things, like the <a href="http://www.creturfetur.com/search/label/hoatzin%20II">hoatzin</a>. I intend to make some awesome hyenas soon, too. Before them, though, I remade another bird.<br />
<br />
Weighing in at about two pounds, it's the clever little New Zealand parrot, the clown of the mountains, the terror of sheep livers, <i>the kea</i>!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">New and improved <i>Nestor notabilis</i>!</td></tr>

There's many things I did differently here. First, the embroidery. That was an adventure! I've never embroidered anything before, and I think sadly in some places it kinda shows.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

Second, the feet. I seem to have discovered the Terrible Secret of Bird Feet. I'm positively thrilled by the results!<br />

In summary, remakes are not always a bad idea. And it's always good to remember where you started and keep experimenting!</div>Lety R-Zhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16451062469578296251noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4231123211558440777.post-25690737245644182522011-11-03T15:18:00.000-07:002011-11-03T15:29:08.014-07:00The happy versatility of spherecreturs<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
For a while back in my youth (i.e. about two years ago) I made little spherepigs. They were clumsy beginner things, cute but not really the most impressive shows of craftsmanship.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9AZZEW75fRIJ5hLkbEelKgCO1RLkpWbqgB7w3DyeX7__c3vg6Cw774sxOrBs5zxraVBDIxrYB2ZEMC4CJEz0PCuqf6qwKAydt1bozz5yd4JyXvIu6vI51sDJ_39yNp_gIBsyP_8WZsaI/s1600/musc5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9AZZEW75fRIJ5hLkbEelKgCO1RLkpWbqgB7w3DyeX7__c3vg6Cw774sxOrBs5zxraVBDIxrYB2ZEMC4CJEz0PCuqf6qwKAydt1bozz5yd4JyXvIu6vI51sDJ_39yNp_gIBsyP_8WZsaI/s320/musc5.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Musclepig, unloved for all his lifetime, now a permanent resident of the Cretur Box.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpsqwHABFuMnuMhdWjWAOLAoVwrS1rw-kFp6ggmsEKuLjuUd5TsHCRjTY3jN2znPVN7JI_WzFCCaF7kr20YVN_hlicNxhqS_DgvEdP0OAeT0OVJfWMiZJDXcV9-i7RGR93cQUpv5MMMIQ/s1600/apricot2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="254" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpsqwHABFuMnuMhdWjWAOLAoVwrS1rw-kFp6ggmsEKuLjuUd5TsHCRjTY3jN2znPVN7JI_WzFCCaF7kr20YVN_hlicNxhqS_DgvEdP0OAeT0OVJfWMiZJDXcV9-i7RGR93cQUpv5MMMIQ/s320/apricot2.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Apricot pig. ... That's all there is to say, really.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So I tried to make them more interesting. First there was a holiday-themed one that ended up being given away at a craft fair. I don't know who got it, or even if anyone ever did; for all I know it floats in the ether and makes woeful little snorting sounds at midnight on Halloween:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUIi_CSDd9FhnIWFyFAqVl4t1VwkHubsXZar4b5ouVL8a_1lIKmIs01uyIxp68dNYjnaItJ5Uz3XCrgLJTEN-vrOgo_GcEI9bYhl3yug0e43QX7Sw6U7OMCtKrxfczVV8HOnFOoxo1Flg/s1600/pumpkin-pig.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUIi_CSDd9FhnIWFyFAqVl4t1VwkHubsXZar4b5ouVL8a_1lIKmIs01uyIxp68dNYjnaItJ5Uz3XCrgLJTEN-vrOgo_GcEI9bYhl3yug0e43QX7Sw6U7OMCtKrxfczVV8HOnFOoxo1Flg/s320/pumpkin-pig.jpg" width="292" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pumpkin pig. Getting better.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Then one ended up pink for some reason, so I decided to take it all the way and experiment with adding appendages:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx-8EFwSQ16T5opyK1RoBjaCFiLQXglLvPntWs8whitW2TSU2XfZBxozLE_u3TazeT8sz9D1EwwsA4klRy7tJCdDx_UGKuXDOtoRG8aAmRuEvdemF84DBc5iVAWztq_nQoaNpLRDHtE_o/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx-8EFwSQ16T5opyK1RoBjaCFiLQXglLvPntWs8whitW2TSU2XfZBxozLE_u3TazeT8sz9D1EwwsA4klRy7tJCdDx_UGKuXDOtoRG8aAmRuEvdemF84DBc5iVAWztq_nQoaNpLRDHtE_o/s320/2.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My favorite part is the little swirly dollop of hair</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
After the moderate success of the flying pink pig, there were no more pigs for a long time. I didn't want to repeat the pink one and cash in on cuteness; instead, I wanted to start a deal where anyone would be able to make up their own completely custom spherepig. But no one seemed interested in the idea. After a lot of awkward marketing, someone finally took me up on the offer, and I was so happy to make this:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHoFGD8uqQ6GrHBA0nrs_OdugyyB4ffHYLj2F1eHjFsRYoBAmxToQvW9xR7WgEhhtUi0hNSG1Q5YDrFhnvTT6LBGRiqBVdqLwUHcByzFvTXtk8JcQKBSMSH3uUiIWM9Akkwg7xiSw4Ra8/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="233" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHoFGD8uqQ6GrHBA0nrs_OdugyyB4ffHYLj2F1eHjFsRYoBAmxToQvW9xR7WgEhhtUi0hNSG1Q5YDrFhnvTT6LBGRiqBVdqLwUHcByzFvTXtk8JcQKBSMSH3uUiIWM9Akkwg7xiSw4Ra8/s320/2.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sort of the evil twin of the pink one</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
But then it never happened again.<br />
<br />
In fact, after that, several aspects of life converged to make a big mess and there were no creturs at all for a while. I lost practice and inspiration, and despite how much I love what I do, I couldn't bring myself to start a good respectable sculpture.<br />
<br />
One day, sitting in front of the computer and a bottle of beer, I forced myself to do a warmup exercise. This is what happened:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6GtcLj59ST4gBnI32zzILTjnBL1K2PcsRLOI8dw-KNknjw3-QFkofevc7kyM98lADZthMh1vfsXKZ3peIcz1wAUkHPHk1Lx3gu4Zg42AAksTOHNycdKuu_PjppZXZDhdtPgjeK28X_0E/s1600/leonardo2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="231" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6GtcLj59ST4gBnI32zzILTjnBL1K2PcsRLOI8dw-KNknjw3-QFkofevc7kyM98lADZthMh1vfsXKZ3peIcz1wAUkHPHk1Lx3gu4Zg42AAksTOHNycdKuu_PjppZXZDhdtPgjeK28X_0E/s320/leonardo2.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">LEONARDO LEADS</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Ninja Turtles make everything better. Revived by the triumph of my decapitated 80's nostalgia trophy, I rediscovered COURAGE and HONOR and PIZZA and I started poking wool constantly again.<br />
<br />
And so, all spherecreturs since have been a lot more interesting and I am actually proud of them. THANK YOU, LEONARDO.<br />
<br />
This one, which you may remember from a previous post, is based on a doodle by <a href="http://hobolobo.net/">Stevan Zivadinovic</a> and was given to <a href="http://philbarbato.com/">Phil Barbato</a> as a Christmas present:<br />
<br />

Then I made two more pigs, very quickly, to contribute to a team challenge from the <a href="http://www.plushteam.com/">Plush Team</a>:<br />

The last two were both made last month, were both commissions, and have not been posted here before. They also both like long walks on the beach and mimosas, probably.<br />

The first is a ladybug, pretty straightforward, first cretur where I've dared to use bare pipe cleaners as limbs:<br />

<br />
I don't know what the lesson is in all of this but I am sure there is one.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I never liked pigs. I know, I know, pigs are cool, pigs are smart, pigs can eat anything, pigs have 6-hour-long orgasms, etc. For a person who has been keenly interested in animals her whole life, I am sure it is pretty weird that I don't like pigs, but listen: they are so smart and so fleshy that they just make me think of gross people. It's an uncanny valley sort of feeling. Did I start making spherepigs as a subconscious way to cope with my strong dislike of pigs? Probably not, or if I did it certainly didn't work. But at least it yielded a lot of experiments and learning opportunities, and looking at the whole history of spherecreturs makes me feel like, at least, I'm advancing.</div>Lety R-Zhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16451062469578296251noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4231123211558440777.post-21354540442844801492011-11-01T11:59:00.000-07:002011-11-01T12:00:47.345-07:00Tamandua, or lesser anteater<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are two species in the anteater genus <i>Tamandua:</i> the Northern Tamandua, which lives in the jungles of Mexico and usually has a well-defined "vest", and the Southern Tamandua, whose vest is a bit blurrier around the edges. There are also some differences in skull shape and gestation periods, but since both species have a lot of individual color variation, it's really difficult to tell the difference between them just by looking, even if you have a specimen of each side by side.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Having said all of that, when I made this one I had the Southern Tamandua (<i>Tamandua tetradactyla</i>) in mind. But if it makes any difference to you, you can imagine that it's a Northern (<i>Tamandua mexicana</i>).</div>

A long time ago, a good friend commissioned me to needle felt a Malayan tapir (<i>Tapirus indicus</i>), the largest of the four species of tapir (and, like all of them, endangered).<br />
<br />
The kicker: I had to do its baby, too. Which in this case ended up being the smallest cretur I've ever made, at only an inch tall and balancing on two legs. It was quite a challenge, and I learned many things from it, one of them being that claws made of Sculpey not only look better, but they also make it easier for the cretur to stand. With such a precariously balanced pose, it was an important discovery to make!<br />

Have you heard of <a href="http://www.schmancytoys.com/about/faq/plush-you">Plush You</a>? It's an annual art show based in Seattle (it has traveled in the past to LA and San Francisco) full of the a lot of <a href="http://www.schmancytoys.com/blog/plush-you">the best plush and fiber toys</a> known to man, or at least to the internet. This year I am in it! Ahh oh my god I'm so excited!<br />
<br />
The opening is this Friday, Oct 14, 5-9 PM, at <a href="http://www.schmancytoys.com/">Schmancy</a>.<br />
<br />
I fully expect everyone in or around Seattle to be there on time and snappily dressed. But if you, like me, are far away and can't or won't see the show, you can at least have a look at the pieces I sent:<br />

Back in June, the <a href="http://madscientistsofetsy.blogspot.com/">Mad Scientists of Etsy</a> issued a challenge – create something inspired by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernst_Haeckel">Ernst Haeckel.</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Being a big fan of the man's illustrations, I looked among <a href="http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=ernst+haeckel&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=7042099995419195513&sa=X&ei=sW6PTt-pDKaEsgLbrammAQ&ved=0CEYQ8wIwAg">his many plates</a> for something that looked a. more like an interpretation of a creature than an easily recognizable animal, and b. was doable in wool (as opposed to, say,<a href="http://www.core.form-ula.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/ernst-haeckel_kunstformen-der-natur000.jpg"> something like this</a>). And so I came upon his <i>Actiniae</i> plate:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a9/Haeckel_Actiniae.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a9/Haeckel_Actiniae.jpg" width="224" /></a></div>
<br />
and decided to start this adventure with the little orange fella at the bottom right corner. Who, in real life, actually looks like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/de/Oc%C3%A9anopolis_-_les_aquariums_008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/de/Oc%C3%A9anopolis_-_les_aquariums_008.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
After a lot of work and some thrilling experimentation with steam dyeing using a spray bottle and a vegetable steamer, the result was this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjClbc3XaDFRT4Hwip9h4mmO_0JJpim8LSTECaZYdZDuM3YIOwXkT5PwY4YKjcFKZVXVs5De2Vhu4l21TIMb_cBkPedrr3W-V5sEtDlQtfPERW-zo5OGshY58XGsbxOFi63FYPu5QYuxK0/s1600/5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="237" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjClbc3XaDFRT4Hwip9h4mmO_0JJpim8LSTECaZYdZDuM3YIOwXkT5PwY4YKjcFKZVXVs5De2Vhu4l21TIMb_cBkPedrr3W-V5sEtDlQtfPERW-zo5OGshY58XGsbxOFi63FYPu5QYuxK0/s320/5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
It looks like the illustration and not much like the real anemone, which is a departure from my usual modus operandi, but an enjoyable one.<br />
It makes a really nice desk companion. Sort of a cheerful marine sunflower that always faces you.</div>

I know, it's been a long time. I left the blog with no warning in the middle of a series of posts about an animal behavior conference. I did not get kidnapped or anything... mostly what happened is I went to Serbia. It was pretty amazing, and I'm still uploading photos. Here's a couple just to show I ain't lyin':<br />

<br />
I also took a bit of time off of the hectic race to keep up with commissions, in order to explore other ideas that I had knocking around. I'll be bringing you up to speed little by little, dear blog. Let's do this in chronological order, shall we?<br />
<br />
If you follow me on <a href="http://creturfetur.tumblr.com/">Tumblr</a>, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/#%21/CreturFetur">Facebook</a>, or <a href="http://twitter.com/#%21/CreturFetur">Twitter</a>, you may have already seen some of these photos. But you certainly haven't seen them all, and anyway it's nice to have it all in one place.<br />
<br />
For today, here's a couple of pigs that think they may have heard a noise in the house at night. They are not certain, but their little minds are racing with horrible possibilities.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The green one has already been taken away to a hopefully less alarming home, but the violet one is <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/82577029/little-purple-needlefelted-spherepig">still up for grabs</a>, and even more terrified now that she's got no one to speculate and go "oh god oh god what was that" with. Please take her, I have things to do and can't go around comforting pigs all the time!<br />

Part 1 is <a href="http://www.creturfetur.com/2011/04/notes-from-conference-part-1-compulsive.html">here</a>. Keep in mind that these are transcribed notes, and thus don't really read as a blog post so much as a series of musings.<br />
<br />
Warning: This is going to be a pretty sad one, being about animal abuse/neglect and PTSD and such. Skip it if you feel it will upset you, as that is not my intention. The next couple of posts will be a lot shorter and a lot less depressing.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">Boredom and loneliness are responses to a lack of stimulation, and are involuntary. They are a form of emotional suffering. But a major reason why we don't see these as a big deal in animals, or at least don't as a whole <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=4&ved=0CDEQFjAD&url=http%3A%2F%2Fgawker.com%2F%23%215622237%2Fhow-4chan-brought-the-evil-british-cat-lady-to-justice&rct=j&q=lady%20cat%20trash%20bin&ei=CrK8TZT1Noa3twfNss20BQ&usg=AFQjCNGfMBc2iEDHkIXxvZVf8MhHyYQKTA&cad=rja">react as strongly </a>to it, is because we have so much power to relieve it ourselves (e.g. we can just go find something to do if we get bored).</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Physical abuse is visual, visceral, shocking; emotional is invisible, harder to recognize, has no visual imagery to elicit. It's not directly linked to death, and thus causes less concern.</div><div style="text-align: left;"> </div><div style="text-align: left;">There are anti-cruelty statutes against physical harm in <a href="http://www.animallaw.info/articles/armpstatecruelty.htm">several states</a>, but no states have anti-cruelty statutes against emotional harm.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Maltreatment is defined as an action (abuse) or inaction (neglect) that threatens a dependent individual's welfare. Both can be physical or emotional, and there is no kind of abuse or neglect that does not have a psychological effect.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Studies have shown that social/emotional pain is derived from the same neural pathways as physical pain. We "feel" it with the same part of our brain.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">What hurts more, physical pain or emotional/social pain? If forced to choose, animals will choose physical discomfort over emotional pain. Puppies will walk across an electrified grid to be with the person they've bonded with. Capuchin monkeys will choose social companionship over food. A mother rat will cross an electrified grid over 50 times to retrieve her pups. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">The CIA training manual (an old version?) mentions that the pain from torture is not as bad as the fear of the pain of torture.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">There is strong evidence to support that animals can feel anxiety, frustration, grief, loneliness, boredom, depression, helplessness, hopelessness, fear, and phobias. (personal note: embarrassment and guilt not on list)</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Emotional Neglect</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Emotional needs, such as companionship, have many of the properties of a physical need such as hunger. The needs vary widely depending on species, sex, etc, but there are universal ones: sense of control (feeling able to affect one's fate), sufficient living space, mental stimulation, sense of security (ability to escape in case of danger), social companionship, and predictability & stability to life events. Passively failing to meet these needs constitutes neglect.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Emotional Abuse</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">There is no clear set line at which keeping a dog in a crate turns into abuse; a dog's tolerance to being in a crate varies from individual to individual. If a dog has separation anxiety and suffers within five minutes of being in a crate, even though other dogs can be there comfortably for much longer, then it's abusive.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Types of emotional abuse: rejecting (with knowledge that the action causes harm), terrorizing (rule by fear), taunting (like at the end of tether or behind bars), isolating (preventing social interaction in social animals), abandonment (active desertion by caregiver), overpressuring (like <a href="http://www.psywww.com/intropsych/ch05_conditioning/release_from_habituation.html">Pavlov's oval dog</a>) .</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Emotional components play a role in all forms of abuse and neglect – fear, terror, anxiety, helplessness, etc. Emotional impact (trauma) outlasts injuries.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><br />
</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Effects</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Comparing emotional neglect vs. neglect + physical abuse: emotional neglect by itself is more harmful, because the attention provided by the physical abuse mitigates the loneliness. E.g. those who misbehave for the negative attention, regardless of the pain of punishment.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">It is difficult to distinguish, through psychological testing alone, between post-traumatic stress and a traumatic brain injury. In both cases, aside from distress, your body is affected. Psychological testing alone, without a background story, can never determine whether abuse took place or not.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">For example, it is a mistake to assume that if a dog is afraid of only men that it was abused by a man. It might mean that it has only ever had contact, negative or not, with women; or a multitude of other reasons.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Maltreatment sustained in early life actually has less long-term effects than in mature dogs. Maltreatment in adulthood, may cause serious mental illnesses; they recover a lot faster when younger.</div></div>Lety R-Zhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16451062469578296251noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4231123211558440777.post-35275467541428482492011-04-12T08:24:00.000-07:002011-04-12T08:24:19.426-07:00Bats- group photoOh my god, look at all these bats!<br />

I went to a conference in Rhode Island last weekend, organized by <a href="http://iaabc.org/conference">IAABC</a>. I took lots of notes in a semi-disjointed style, writing down particularly intriguing points in my notebook. In the interest of purity, I will transcribe my notes here pretty much exactly as they are in my notebook, across a 4-post series spanning 6 conferences (I took more notes in some than in others; some talks were mostly geared towards professional animal trainers and thus I couldn't quite relate). Here is the first one:<br />
<br />
--------- <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><u>Compulsive Disorder Across the Species</u></span></div><div style="text-align: center;">by <a href="http://www.tufts.edu/vet/facpages/dodman_n.html">Dr. Nick Dodman</a></div><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<br />
"Obsessive-compulsive disorder" was introduced as a term in 1992 by Judith Rapoport.<br />
<br />
OCD cycle: obsession => anxiety => compulsion => relief => repeat<br />
<br />
There can be a compulsion exhibited without an obsession present.<br />
<br />
Pyromania and paraphilias are included in the OCD spectrum.<br />
<br />
Compulsive behaviors were previously known as "stereotypies"– repetitive behavior that causes relief from displacement; exhibited by captive animals in suboptimal conditions. E.g. "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weaving_%28horse%29">weaving</a>": the swaying that elephants and horses (among other ambulatory species) display in captivity.<br />
<br />
Horses have reverse tolerance to morphine – they get more stimulated by it as time passes. Also, when stimulated by morphine, they start pacing in their stall (or digging, or '<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cribbing_%28horse%29">cribbing</a>'); when given a morphine blocker they stop. The morphine blocker works the same way with dogs' acral lick (overlicking certain areas - wrist, carpus, or back leg - to the point of baldness or bleeding [note: if this is presented elsewhere it's not acral lick, could be a skin issue]).<br />
<br />
<u><br />
</u><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><u>In dogs</u></span><br />
<br />
Dogs with Acral Lick Disorder respond the same way as human OCD sufferers to anti-compulsive medications.<br />
<br />
Some canine compulsive behaviors: fly snapping, flank or blanket suckling, light chasing, tail chasing.<br />
<br />
Fly snapping is most common in spaniels, dobermans, Bernese mountain dogs, springer spaniels, labs, German shepherds, Norfolk & Norwich terriers. It consists of the dog snapping at imaginary flies and following them with their eyes.<br />
<br />
Flank/blanket suckling, which consists of the dog suckling for a prolonged period on a blanket or on its own flank (the entirety of it; they wrap their mouth around their whole body if possible) is present in dobermans, weimaraners, and dachshunds – all German breeds. It's genetic, present on chromosome 7. Scientists are currently investigating whether this gene is present in people and other species with OCD.<br />
<br />
Tail chasing: most present in bull terriers, is accompanied by staring at walls and seizures - is more similar to autism than OCD.<br />
<br />
Light/shadow chasing: is triggered by a flashlight or laser pointer, but chasing behavior continues even after the trigger disappears. Most common in fox terriers, sheepdogs, schnauzers, rottweilers, golden retrievers, border collies. Deaf dogs are more prone to it.<br />
<br />
Other canine compulsive behaviors: rock chewing, stick/ball playing (to the degree of being inseparable from the stick/ball), food bowl fetish, compulsive swimming, digging obsessive-compulsive behavior, "shopping" (arranging objects obsessively in sets or shapes).<br />
<br />
Behavioral treatment:<br />
<ol><li>Identify and avoid overstimulation (remove conflict)</li>
<li>Optimize management (consistent schedule, puzzle toys), get the dog a job</li>
<li>More enrichment – dog needs a job! Agility, clicker training, hiking, herding. Accomodate to dog's breed.</li>
</ol>Pharmacological treatment:<br />
<ul><li>Floxetine: serotonine reupdate blocker</li>
<li>Namenda: glutamate blocker, currently marketed for Alzheimer's and works for OCD better than Prozac</li>
</ul><span style="font-size: large;"><u>In cats</u></span><br />
<br />
Disorder takes form of:<br />
<ul><li>Eating: wool sucking. Can also be acrylic or some other fabric, so long as the texture is similar, as this is a texture-specific disorder. Asian breeds are more prone to this.</li>
<li>Grooming to the point of baldness (this starts as displacement behavior and turns into compulsive habit if not curbed promptly), inside back & front legs and along sides. If present along spine, it might be eczema instead. Can be brought on by stress. More common in females, starts at an early age. It's not just constant licking; they also grab tufts of fur with their teeth and pull them off.</li>
<li>Grooming with aggression. Starts at 2 or 3 years of age; there is always a stressor/precipitator, usually Asian breeds. Prozac cures or helps a lot.</li>
<ul><li>Type 1: pupils are dilated, skin ripples (twitching as if bothered by a fly), frenetic grooming along spine.</li>
<li>Type 2: includes tail as well as spine, and there is tail chasing.</li>
<li>Type 3: possible hallucinations – ducks to avoid invisible object, follows invisible things with eyes.</li>
<li>Type 4: any of the above leading to grand mal seizures.</li>
</ul></ul>Behavioral treatment: Alleviate stress, enrich environment, add challenges to distract the cat and keep it occupied.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><u>In birds</u></span><br />
<br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichotillomania">Trichotillomania</a> in birds is identical to humans': pluck, examine, nibble on bulb. This behavior responds to Prozac but with higher proportional doses than one would use for humans, because birds have higher metabolisms.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><u>Etc & conclusion</u></span><br />
<br />
Pigs are the best model for human OCD behavior. Personal note: this only further strengthens my opinion that pigs are uncannily creepy.<br />
<br />
<br />
Horses can have Tourette's.<br />
<br />
While pacing back and forth so much as to wear a trench into the ground is a very common OCD behavior in wild cats, observable in zoos where they don't have a rich enough environment, domestic cats do not exhibit this behavior.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coprophagia">Coprophagia</a> is a learned behavior at first; puppies learn it when they watch their mother cleaning the nest by eating the puppies' feces. Most puppies grow out of it by age 1; those who don't are most likely obsessed and it has become a compulsive behavior.<br />
<br />
Causes of OCD across species:<br />
Genetic factors, type A personality (being a 'worrier'), suboptimally stimulating environments, stress.<br />
<br />

I hope you found this readable/interesting. Leave comments, I love comments! Next post will be on the psychological aspects of abuse and neglect, and is probably going to be pretty depressing, so between then and now I will put up some photos of the other two bats I just finished, to mitigate the effect.Lety R-Zhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16451062469578296251noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4231123211558440777.post-35396007485597036312011-04-07T08:29:00.000-07:002011-04-07T08:29:58.144-07:00Spotted Bat & Island Flying FoxOh hi! Good heavens!Here's two new designs that I finished this weekend – one regular bat that used to be a brooch, and one brooch that at least looks very very similar to the first bat I ever made. I used Sculpey for the brooch instead of Lumina, which allowed me to have much more detail AND fabric-less wings that I am actually really happy with! Hooray!<br />

What else is new? More bats. Lots of bats. I made a fruit bat, but the photos didn't come out so well, so I'll try again tomorrow morning and post them then. I'm also going to start work on one of these guys, apparently one of North America's rarest mammals:<br />

I will probably keep it to a maximum of two in the future, but I can't deny that I'm very pleased with the results. I'll make this a two-parter; today I will post photos of the presents I sent, and later (as soon as I receive the third present, or maybe sooner) I will post photos of the ones I got.<br />

I present to you the Mr. Burns Toad (a new species discovered a couple of months ago in Colombia), an octopus, and a spheredoodle:<br />

<br />
So, remember the <a href="http://www.creturfetur.com/2010/11/what-im-working-on-right-now.html">axolotls-in-progress that I posted a while ago</a>? I have finally finished them all! There are still many more to come but there's a big chance that it will get kind of repetitive after a while, so I'm just going to make this last exciting axolotl post full of color and variety, and keep subsequent axolotls to myself and my <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/creturfetur">Flickr page</a>.<br />
<br />
Here are three varieties of axolotl:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlRWSaqWlDttktFO4CxwhmB5zkA5ZZm4a1wPbS1xEq4mY46Ut9h2tmRjkMPRaa-W7jTwDuLs5x-tau7pz90rh8rn3UyjLs0f6qC27Kn9U0Ugn_USM2-25PeADMA2UclGqTFF_JwNSAm88/s1600/lottalotls1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="224" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlRWSaqWlDttktFO4CxwhmB5zkA5ZZm4a1wPbS1xEq4mY46Ut9h2tmRjkMPRaa-W7jTwDuLs5x-tau7pz90rh8rn3UyjLs0f6qC27Kn9U0Ugn_USM2-25PeADMA2UclGqTFF_JwNSAm88/s320/lottalotls1.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Golden albino, melanoid, and leucistic.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>These all exist, and in fact there's several more different colors of axolotl. <a href="http://www.axolotl.org/genetics.htm">Here</a> is an excellent resource if you want to learn more about it.<br />
