First craft fair + three bats! (Photo heavy post)

Last Saturday, Cretur Fetur made its first real world appearance.

I was rolling wool in my hands, not applauding myself

It was a highly instructive experience, and more fun than I expected. Most of the time I was frantically trying to finish another skull, another zombie head, and another bat – two out of three while selling other stuff ain't bad! I also gave four pumpkin needle felting classes, which are definitely something I'd like to keep doing in the future (but made me aware of my faults as a teacher, such as focusing on my own example-thing too much and not enough on the students).

Tons more photos, including some neato bats, under the fold:

I named this calavera after my grandfather, who passed away a little over a month ago

The fair was Halloween- and Día de Muertos-themed, so I had pumpkins, jack-o'-lanterns (they had a little electric tea light inside!), zombie heads, and calaveras. I also had three bats! Here are they:

Honduran white bat (Ectophylla alba). A brooch!

Eastern pipistrelle (Perimyotis subflavus). A brooch as well!
Little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus). Not a brooch! I finished this one at the fair.

Only the pipistrelle sold at the fair, but the other two sold on Etsy the day after. A good month for bats. Here are the watercolor drawings on the cards that went out with the Honduran white and the little brown:

  1. So you might do another needle felting class sometime? I've been looking at the materials for this for some time, but haven't wanted to invest in buying them if I a) didn't like it or b) decided it was likely that I would injure myself too often. I'd be interested in a class. :)

  2. I would love to! It only takes 20-30 minutes to make a pumpkin. Here's a photo of the pumpkins my first class made:

Hey, MamaChristy!I'm trying out a new thing here that allows me to reply to comments... hopefully it works. You may not have seen my reply earlier because it wouldn't have notified you.

  6. question: How do you do the bones of the wings? Any tips on how to get tight, thin, long pieces?!?

    1. Yes: wrap thin cloth-covered wire (floral wire) with wool roving, and felt it tightly. Try as hard as you can not to poke through to the other side, and not to break your needle.
